Ayurveda, Explained Simply

An ancient system of wellness.

Ayurveda is a traditional system of health and wellness that originated in India thousands of years ago.

At its heart is a simple idea:

People are different, so their approach to wellness should be different too.

What Is Ayurveda?

Ayurveda is a traditional system of health and wellness that originated in India thousands of years ago.

The word Ayurveda comes from Sanskrit:

Ayur — life
Veda — knowledge or science

It is often translated as “the knowledge of life.”

Ayurveda takes a whole-person approach to wellness. Rather than looking only at one symptom or concern, an Ayurvedic practitioner considers many aspects of a person's daily life — including diet, digestion, sleep, activity, stress, routines, environment and individual constitution.

The aim is to better understand the individual and provide personalized guidance that supports balance and healthy daily living.

Ayurveda Is Personalized

Have you ever noticed that two people can eat the same food and feel completely different afterwards?

One person loves cold weather while another struggles with it.

One person wakes naturally early, while another functions better later in the day.

People differ in their digestion, appetite, energy, sleep, lifestyle and response to their environment.

Ayurveda has traditionally recognized these differences.

That is why Ayurvedic guidance is individualized rather than based on one routine for everyone.

What does an Ayurvedic practitioner look at?

Your first appointment is mostly a conversation.

We want to understand what everyday life looks like for you — not just why you booked the appointment.

Depending on your situation, we may discuss:

Digestion and appetite, food habits and meal timing; sleep and energy; work and daily routine; activity and exercise; stress and relaxation; seasonal changes; your health history and current wellness goals.

Traditional Ayurvedic assessment may also include observations such as the tongue, pulse and physical constitution.

There is no test you need to prepare for and no previous knowledge of Ayurveda is expected.

So what happens after we understand you?

Rather than giving everyone the same routine, your practitioner may suggest changes that fit your individual circumstances.

These can relate to:

Food : How, when and what you eat according to Ayurvedic principles.

Daily routine : Simple adjustments around meals, sleep, activity and self-care.

Seasonal living : Adapting certain routines as climate and seasons change.

Traditional practices : Appropriate Ayurvedic self-care practices may be discussed according to your individual needs.

Ayurvedic therapies : When appropriate, your practitioner may recommend traditional wellness services such as Abhyanga or Shirodhara.

Traditional practices, delivered in a modern setting

Ayurveda has a long tradition of therapeutic and wellness practices using oil, touch, routine and individualized care.

At Mohan Ayurvedic Wellness, these traditions are offered in a professional environment while respecting both their origins and the expectations of clients receiving complementary wellness services in Canada.

Ayurveda can complement your healthcare — not replace it.

We believe traditional Ayurveda and modern healthcare can each have an appropriate place in a person's wellness journey.

Ayurvedic consultations at Mohan Ayurvedic Wellness are complementary wellness services. They do not replace medical diagnosis, emergency care or treatment from your physician or another regulated healthcare professional.

If you have a medical condition, take prescription medication, are pregnant or are under the care of another healthcare professional, we encourage you to continue that care and keep your Ayurvedic practitioner informed.
